Ups and downs

Do you ever have those days when you just kinda wish you could wake up all over again and it would all be OK,,,,well I had one of those days yesterday. I had a fantastic start to the week. I got hired on a new project which is an AMAZING client in Santa Monica. It's gonna be really more classic and colorful then ethnic and boho, so it will show some versatility on my part.

I am also making headway on finishing up this big outdoor room I have been working on for what seems like an eternity. All was good in the world and in the land of Amber Interiors and then BOOM BOOM BOOM, In walks the biggest Muppet character I have ever crossed paths with. An unprofessional prick who waddled onto the job site, saw my hair color and guessed my age and decided I was an idiot who he could try and use as a scape goat for his royal fuck-up on this job. He screwed up in so many ways but instead of taking it on the chin and fixing his problem, he pointed his finger at me and said "SHE DID IT"!
Now in this business it's common to be working shoulder to shoulder with these contractor types who are always gonna be smarter and one year ahead of you in experience. Some are cool, most are intimidated by me, and ALL of them initially assume I a dumb blonde with a whole lotta air between my ears. Obviously incapable of holding my own in this mans world and obviously not able to walk and chew gum at the same time. Well, ladies and gentlemen, I will not sit here and list off the credentials or experience I have which qualifies me to be working in and amongst theses contractors, but what I will say is, ladies if your in the "business of interior design" always make sure to get it in writing!!!!

People suck and will always point fingers instead of taking blame. Always work with people you trust on a job site. NEVER hire or let your clients hire someone they don't know, and NEVER trust a man who calls you a bitch and then tells you, your the one who instigated the fight.
Sometimes I wish my eyes were video cameras.

Ok now that I got that off my chest I am in no mood to harp...I am just gonna show you this video. CAUSE ITS HILARIOUS AND THIS IS WHAT I WAS DEALING WITH...

  2. That sucks Amber! I haven't been in your exact situation but I sure know how you feel. I would often get old ladies berating me at market thinking I was a temp who didn't know anything or would tell me that they've "been in business longer than I've been alive", I just hope it makes their sad little lives better to rail on me and brush it off. chin up and enjoy the holiday weekend with your amazing family!

  4. i've been meaning to comment for a while and tell you that i'm a huge fan of your work. i'm a friend of jamie's so hopefully i'll get to meet you if you come to the new store opening (she said you might!).
anyway, i'm 31 and work in state gov. i have a masters degree and am proud of my resume. i struggle CONSTANTLY with pricks who are the state gov. equivalent to the contractor you described. they're the guys who wear button down short sleeve shirts and pleated dockers. you know "those" guys. i personally love fucking them up with my intelligence and "i will be your boss one day fat ass" look. get em sistah.

  5. Hi Amber. I just became follower of your blog a few days ago an it has quickly become one of my faves! I am also a Designer and had a situation with an old man who reps Wolf appliances. After meeting with him, the client and the contractor I made my selections. Six months later the appliances go in the new kitchen and the fridge is the wrong model/size. He decided it would be fun to blame me. Everyone went back through their paper trails and emails and discovered it was in fact his mistake. Not only did I send I "strongly worded" email on how unprofessional that was, I also told everyone on the job as well. Thanks for sharing! We gals have to be tough in this industry and I'm sure you held your own very well! Happy blogging!!

  6. I can only relate in the sense that when I sold heart valves I was in a MANS world- cardiac surgery. They always looked at my blonde hair and my age and thought what the hell does she know---until they asked who would be flying in to assist them in the surgery on the implantation, and I said 'youre looking at her.' Men. Some things in business really haven't changed. What's that? you say its 2011? uh huh. love you doll. xoxo shel

  7. Wow, that guy sounds like my contractor! I guess they are a dime a dozen in this business. The sad part is he is such an a-hole that it makes me want to quit all together. Amber, how do you find the good ones? and when you end up with one that sucks, how do you not get your clients stuck in the middle?

  8. A - was on an Extreme Classroom Makeover job for KIDS IN WHEELCHAIRS and this contractor was so pissed that I was the project manager and directing people what to do that he chewed me out in front of everyone and walked off the job. It was supposed to be about the kids and he made it all about him. I am blond and young too, but most times it is not about our looks, but their little dicks.
    Feel better!

  10. Amber, it shouldn't happen - but it does. As othe readers have commented, across all occupations. I'm now 'older' and get more respect but I look back and think that those awful experiences occur because some persons find the intelligence / blonde / talented / confident combo so intimidating because of their own shortfalls! Try to always remain professional yourself during these encounters; you will gather a team of respectful co-workers as a result. You've got a great sense of humour - that always helps! (You had me wetting my pants at the straw-up-nose part of the video!)

  14. Lesson learned. This moments are the ones that show what people is made of, just by the way they react to a though situation. I so much respect you, even more than for your wonderful taste and great job, but for who you are. M.

  17. Speaking of always pointing fingers and never taking blame...Most people on the face of this earth are exactly like that. It is one of my biggest pet peeves. When I am at work and someone comes to me and says, "so and so has this wrong." I always say.....Well, If you talk to them about it, it will probably be SOMEONE ELSE'S FAULT. I sat in my office one time and out of ten people there, I tried to decide who takes blame for their actions and who blames others. Two out of ten is the answer. People just have a problem taking blame. It says a lot about a person. If someone automatically jumps up and takes blame for something in this day and age, they are automatically my friend for life. It is a rare thing! Same goes for nice people....they are probably two out of ten. Sad to say...

  18. i have been in situations just like that...i do live in the south after all and i would be willing to bet 75% of the douchebags in that video live within 20 miles of me.
either way...it sucks. i am blonde too and know what you mean. i have learned to fuck with people like that though..i just turn it around on them. i'll tell you what scares dudes like that away..psycho bitch from hell.
that's who. have you ever looked at guys like that straight into their inbred crossed eyes? and then in a soft whisper that they have to lean in to hear said.."i will fucking murder you in your sleep later if you don't do exactly what i say.."
    try it.
